My school has launched the Advanced Academics initiative. During one hour a week, third to fifth-grade students flow to different classrooms to seek different activities, challenges and collaborate with others. Teachers host maker spaces, STEAM activities, Destination Imagination workshops and more. I decided to try something new, podcasting.
I didn't know how many kids would be interested, or if we would be able to pull through. I didn't know exactly how to organize it either, but I did believe that any chance to foster students' expression and communication skills was worth a shot. I found several guidelines through NPR and The New York Times. The plan was simple yet ambitious, five weeks to brainstorm, script, record, edit and publish a student-made podcast.
It took us two weeks to narrow a topic and set a plan of action. Our podcast will be about the activities that make our school great. We are on the quest of finding what defines our school's identity. The timeframe is narrow, but we'll start interviewing and gathering information this week. Student's have their assignments, questions, now they have to record, upload, edit, revise, publish. Easy peasy! Wish us luck!
