How to review concepts prior to an exam? How do you engage students in critical thinking and problem-solving? How to build their confidence? In order to prepare for our second district checkpoint, we decided to review the math topics setting up problems like a leveling up game.

The first level involved double-digit multiplication problems. Students worked in partners and entered the answers in a Google Form to self-check. On the second level, students solved problems with equations and strip diagrams. They verified their answers through a color code digital lock. The final stage was a set of area models and partial product problems. These problems were solved on pen and paper so students could show their work.

Having students check their own work in the first two stages, served as formative assessment and feedback. If they saw their answers were incorrect, they went back to the problem and revise it. They review their work and found their mistakes.

The activity went well, all students were able to finish the first stage successfully. Some teams required assistance on the second one, but discussions were helpful and with the support, they were also able to complete the tasks. Finally, all students were able to complete the three levels. Exhausted but happy, we reviewed. Checkpoint, we are ready!
