Hispanic Heritage Month

Estamos orgullosos de nuestro origen. Several years ago, we started celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in our school. As the years have passed it has been a pleasure to witness how our Hispanic students see themselves represented, how the student body learns as we research characters, listen to stories and playfully decorate our hallways.

This year our program reached new heights. The Cultural Committee gather some ideas in order to make the celebrations meaningful and fun. As usual, we decorated the hallways with Papel Picado. In addition, we added several activities:

- a mural to represent our school's cultural heritage.

- a playlist with music from different countries

- a bingo with facts about Latin American countries and characters

- a week of Hispanic Heritage Read Alouds by members of the community

- a research slideshow by class

- a musical presentation for the lower grades and karaoke for the upper grades

- and a Piñata contest

I personally enjoyed the music filling our hallways, playing bingo as a class, and gathering over a dozen of readers from several countries to visit our classes. However, I would not ever have guessed the immense support of the piñata contest. Not only was such a great experience to make a piñata with my students, but the community involvement in the contest was unexpected!

Although some ideas didn't work as planned like the mural, the research slideshow, and the karaoke, I think we made great additions that will become a school-wide tradition.
